Automated harvesting solutions are critical to address harvesting and availability concerns. Through multi-institutional and transdisciplinary collaboration, partnerships and outreach efforts, we aim to develop and transfer a commercial viability robotic harvesting technology to help fruit growers achieve labor and production cost savings.
Tree fruits like apples are still hand harvested, making labor the single largest costs for growers. The rising cost and growing shortage of labor threatens the profitability, sustainability and global competitiveness of US specialty crops, which are critical to the economy of the rule communities and the nourishment of people.
